Madonna Draws End to Stay in Malawi

Sunday, April 5, 2009

With her family plans taking a major setback, Madonna departed Malawi earlier today (April 5) following a stay in which she was denied in her bid to adopt a 3-year-old orphan named Mercy James.

“We are ready with our grounds challenging [High Court judge] Chombo’s ruling,” Madonna’s Malawian lawyer, Alan Chinula, told People magazine of an already filed appeal.Prior to leaving town, Madge paid a visit to Gumulira’s village to check on the progress of her funding near Mchinji, also spending the final day alongside young Mercy before sending her back to the orphanage with a tender.
Of the situation, a staffer told press, “Madonna spent some time with Mercy; she looked sad but Lourdes, who had clicked with the little girl, looked devastated.”
